How to Coach Yourself

A Step-by-Step Guide for Women Ready for Personal Growth and Accountability

What does “how to coach yourself” even mean? If you’ve ever journaled through a tough season to find your way through, created your own goal action plan after a podcast binge while on a run, or read self-help books and spent serious time reflecting on the topics discussed—you’ve likely been coaching yourself without even realizing it.

Self-coaching is a powerful tool. But what happens when you’ve reached the edge of your own insight, and you’re craving more clarity, confidence, and connection? You know you have done serious work on yourself, and maybe most of that work alone, in the early hours of the morning.

There are only so many ideas and ways you can work through your self-doubt, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome on your own. There are only so many personal development books you can read and reflect upon on your own. As humans, we crave the connection of others, as we know we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

It’s time for your next step in your personal growth journey. Investing in coaching or mentorship.

What Is Self-Coaching and Why Does It Matter?

Self-coaching is the practice of guiding yourself through life’s challenges using reflection, intention, and self-led strategies. It’s what women like you do when you’re motivated to grow—but not yet supported by a coach or community.

How do I know that? Because I have been self coahing myself since I was in high school, without knowing that is what I was doing.

If you’re here on this site, it’s because you’ve outgrown doing it all alone, and you’re ready for more personalized and connected growth. This is the heart of why I started my business: to help motivated women who are ready to unlock why they’re stuck, and gain the clarity and confidence to achieve their dreams and goals.

My How to Coach Yourself Framework for Personal Growth and Goal-Setting

First, let me tell you that I don’t believe that setting goals is actually about a goal. The goal is important, yes. But we set goals to achieve an outcome. Why are we looking to achieve an outcome? Because something inside us right now is mis-aligned, causing us to search for something more. So, we set the goal.

During the Messy Middle of achieveing the goal is where all the magic of personal growth happens. That messy jammy middle is where I love to dig in deep, and help women like you get to their next level of growth. That is where the “feeling like I’m missing something” resides.

I have been there too. I have coached myself my entire adult life. I’ve spent countless hours isolated in my growth, devouring self-help books, podcasts, YouTube videos, and courses when I could. You are not alone in feeling like this!

This six-part process is the foundation I use in my coaching, and it’s likely the one you’ve been intuitively building yourself. When followed with intention, it helps transform your self-doubt into confidence—and your chaos into clarity.

1. Reflect with Honesty and Curiosity

Start by asking:

  • What’s working?
  • What’s feeling heavy?
  • What patterns do I keep repeating?

Reflection is the anchor of all self-coaching. It builds awareness, which is the foundation for any real personal growth.

2. Reconnect to Your Core Values

You can’t coach yourself toward goals that don’t align with your identity.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I value most right now?
  • How do I want to feel as I move toward my goals?

When your goals reflect your values, you’ll stop sabotaging yourself—and start showing up with purpose.

3. Visualize the Future You

Picture the version of you who has already:

  • Launched the business
  • Set strong boundaries
  • Feels calm and confident in her choices

Visualization isn’t fluffy—it’s training your brain to believe it’s possible.

4. Define Your Goal with Clarity

Generic goals create generic results. Get specific.

Instead of: “I want to be more productive.”

Say: “I want to create a weekly workflow that helps me finish work by 3pm so I can pick up my kids and feel present.”

Clarity cuts through overwhelm.

5. Build a Roadmap with Milestones

This is the hard part—the messy middle.

Break your goal into small steps. Ask:

  • What can I do this week to move forward?
  • What milestone will I celebrate in 30 days?

Progress builds confidence.

Milestones keep momentum.

6. Reflect, Pivot, and Celebrate

Personal growth doesn’t come from “crushing” goals. It comes from noticing how you’re changing as you pursue them. No matter how small, reflect on your wins.

Take time each month to:

  • Reflect on what’s working
  • Pivot what’s not
  • Celebrate your courage, not just your outcomes

Why It’s Not About the Goal (It’s About Who You Become)

The truth? It’s never been about the goal.

It’s about the growth that happens in the uncomfortable, often messy middle. The you who learns to set boundaries. The you who speaks up. The you who trusts her own decisions.

Self-coaching gets you started. But becoming the woman you see in your mind? That often requires outside support, perspective, and real accountability.

What If You’re Feeling Isolated or Stuck?

You’re not alone.

Many of the women I coach have spent years doing the work—reading, journaling, healing—but they still feel:

  • Isolated in their growth
  • Unsure of their next step
  • Tired of going it alone

They don’t need more information. They need support, structure, and community.
