How To Make A Vision Board

What is a vision board?

A vision board is a visual representation of your dreams and goals that you have for a defined period of time, usually for an upcoming year. It can consist of images and text that relate to the person making it, and can serve as a motivational tool to keep your focus on continuing progress on your goals. Most of us get super excited about our goals around New Years, and then by mid-February, we’ve lost all traction. Once that traction is lost, our self doubt begins to speak, and those goals may not come to fruition. A vision board itself isn’t going to make your goal come to life. You my friend, have to take the action to make it an achieved goal! Vision boards are fun and simply motivational tools of our goals.

How To Make A Vision Board

You can be as creative as you would like making a vision board! You can make a traditional magazine cut-out on Poster Board vision board, or you can make one digitally in Canva, which is what I did. Once you decide what type of vision board you will make, then you need to think about your goals for the year, and which ones you want to place on your board. You will need graphics that represent your goals. I used a mix of personal photos along with stock photos from Canva. You can also search Pinterest for inspiration and photos. I made this vision board on Canva using the free version, so everything that was stock was free to me.  Once you have your goals defined and your images that go along with those goals, you’re ready to make your vision board!

How To Make A Vision Board in Canva

  • Log into Canva and create an account if you do not have one.
  • Use the search bar and type vision board. Select a vision board that speaks to you.
  • Upload your photos that represent your goals. These can be personal photos, saved from Pinterest, or Canva’s stock photos.
  • Add text and a title with a year for your vision board. If you have a word of the year, add that in, or (upload it as a photo with the definition.)
  • Upload it and share it on all your social media!
  • You can print your vision board I did mine on walgreens.com as an 8×10 photo, or save it as your phone background.
  • Make it visible! Place it in a location so that you will see it everyday!
2023 Vision Board
Hey Goal Sister- 2023 Vision Board

As you can see from my vision board, my goals include, healthy habits like drinking my smoothie and water, gardening, reading, journaling, traveling, saving money, running, cooking with my daughter, and lots of time on the water, as that is my happy place.

Where Do I Put my Vision Board?

It is imperative that you hang your vision board up where you will see it every day! If you just make your vision board and save it on your phone, you won’t ever see it again. But, you can save your vision board as your lock screen, and then you would see it every day when you glance at your phone. Or you can print it out, and put it in your bedroom, closet, or office door. I put my vision board on my office door because I walk by it every single day.

I prefer a digital vision board and not a huge poster simply because of the space it will take up to store it. If it’s a digital vision board, then I can save it on my Pinterest board, print it out on an 8×10, and I can share it on social media. My vision board is photo paper, so when the year is over, I can store it in a folder rather than have a rolled up poster board. I think a digital vision board on Canva is really a great way to go, and you can look back at them easily in the future at any time! By the end of the year, you can maintain view your progress and now you have a physical copy like a time capsule of your goals for that year!

Host a Vision Board Party!

Make it fun! You can grab some girlfriends and you can host a vision board party. I plan on doing that next January. Not only will you get to hang out with your friends for a couple of hours, you also open the possibility of accountability with your friends. You can check in with each other a couple times a year, and see how your goals are going.
